Here we have decided to describe a list of things to consider when deciding if to study abroad or in Ghana. Well, many Ghanaians have always had this debate of studying abroad is actually better than studying in Ghana. We have decided to help you in making this decision.
Here’s a list to consider when deciding to study abroad;
Academic Fit
Before deciding to study abroad one of the first questions you should ask yourself is do you really have a true interest in the subject/courses offered in the program. Statistics have shown that many Ghanaians just want to travel abroad all in the name of study when they don’t even really have an interest in the program they are actually applying for. Another important point to consider is if your choice of a program would enhance your knowledge, skills and your professional aspirations. These are important questions that should be asked.
Program Model
What level of cultural or language immersions are you seeking? Are you interested in a program that provides hands-on learning opportunities (i.e. e-service learning or research)? These are questions you should ask yourself because you can also get these learning opportunities here in Ghana.
Location
When deciding to travel abroad to study choosing a location i.e. City/Town you would like to study is necessary because the climate change you experience in some countries like Russia, USA, Italy etc. are very different from what you might be used to in Ghana. You find out that many people get sick or can’t even stand the weather change.
Cost
Studying abroad is really expensive the program cost of your choice of study should be taken into consideration when deciding if to study abroad or here in Ghana because you can also get a quality education here in Ghana for far less cost. Studying abroad is good it improves you intellectually and broadens your perspective about things by learning a new culture and mixing with a different race but a question you should ask yourself will study abroad lead to more loans or debts for you or your sponsors?
Moral Standards
Studying in Ghana has this important aspect of it which makes it relatively better than studying abroad in terms of morals and values. This is because discipline is held high in Ghana universities and this is not the same in many foreign universities. People who study abroad tend to lose tune with their culture and traditions, they tend to embrace the western cultures and beliefs that are usually contradictory to our cultural beliefs. These students pick up numerous vices because of the liberality overseas.
Post-Graduation Plans
Bear in mind that if you decided to study abroad and you eventually graduate that in a number of foreign countries there will be residency and work criteria requirements you will need to meet as soon as you are no longer a full-time student. But here in Ghana after graduation, you don’t need such as a requirement for getting a job.
Family Support
Studying abroad is good but something you should also take into consideration is that you travel far away from family and familiar surroundings. All of these can be stressful and difficult to deal with if you are not tough, this might be overwhelming and you find yourself abandoning the program you signed up for. But when you study in Ghana you have your family support and familiar surroundings even if your school is in a different state the distance is not as far as studying abroad so this point cannot be undermined when choosing to study in Ghana.
Conclusion
As at 2017, the cost for studying in The Massachusetts Institute of Technology for an undergraduate program was 49,580 USD and compared to Ashesi University College which is perceived to be expensive, the fees for an undergraduate course for the same year depending on the choice of program ranges from 300,000-800,000 which is far cheaper than studying abroad, so why not get a good school here in Nigeria that has a program of your choice and invest those extra funds which could have been used for international tuition in a lucrative business and become an employer than going abroad to study and still looking for a job. In as much as studying abroad is attractive looking at the points given above do you really think it is worth it? Unlike what is perceived by many Nigeria students there are no automatic jobs even after studying overseas and the cost of studying abroad is so expensive. Here in www.ghanacourses.com Study Local Ghana, we believe studying in Ghana is good and with numerous opportunities. Why not study locally, in Ghana and have a good plan for your future.
